IIM in India

The Indian Institutes of Management are a group of 13 management institutions which are autonomous, with their own decision making bodies, set up by the Government of India post independence, to further its objectives of providing quality education to the citizens of the country and taking an active part in the development of the nation. The IIMs were first set up under the guiding vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minster of the country, on the recommendations provided by the Planning Commission. They have since become the most prestigious management institutions of the country and every aspiring management student dreams of cracking the rigorous qualifying examination which is considered to be among the toughest in the world.

The Council of the IIMs is headed by the Minister for Human Resource Development and consists of the heads of all the thirteen IIMs in the country. The most important courses in these IIMs remain the flagship Post Graduate course in Management and the Post Graduate Diploma course in Management. Over time, each of the IIMs has developed their own area of specialization and there is fierce competition among the various IIMs. IIM Ahmedabad is the top ranked B school in the country followed closely by some of the other IIMs.

Short-duration diploma courses are also offered by a number of IIMs for executives or professionals who need to boost their career and obtain the advanced education that an IIM will provide.
